In Luke 24:50-53, we find one of the most remarkable responses to what might seem like a sorrowful event. Jesus is leaving His disciples, ascending to heaven. Yet their response is not grief, but great joy.
The Blessing Before Departure
"While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven." (Luke 24:51)
Jesus does not leave His disciples without blessing. Even in His departure, He is ministering to them, assuring them of His continued care and love.
Why Joy?
The disciples returned to Jerusalem with great joy because they understood that Christ's ascension was not an ending, but a beginning. He was going to prepare a place for them, and He would send the Holy Spirit to be with them always.
As we reflect on the ascension, we too can find great joy. Christ reigns at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us. His kingdom advances, and one day He will return in glory.
